Consider Remodeling your Kitchen as your Holiday Gift to Yourself!

For many homeowners, the kitchen is the most highly used and trafficked room in the house. It is a gathering place for both the family and guests alike; and even if cooking isn't really your strong suit, it's still important to be happy with the space that you have and proud to show off your kitchen. There are four different areas to consider when planning for a kitchen remodel.
Cabinets: One way to dramatically alter the look of your kitchen is to enhance your cabinetry. There are so

many options in color, style, fixture layout and knobs. Both the design and layout of your cabinets is critical in obtaining a kitchen that works best with your everyday life. Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC works directly with our client and our designer to develop the best possible kitchen space for your needs.

#1. Color: The traditional Wood look is still very popular and yields many different shades to choose from. You also have options such as glazed finishes, natural looks or even painted finishes. Many homeowners today even elect for a look combining a couple finishes.

#2. Style: Bold corners and defined edges, elegant engraving or simple patterns are subtle but impacting features to your overall look. Adding crown moldings or additional trim pieces can personalize your kitchen design.

#3. Fixture Layout: Your appliances play an important role in your cabinet layout. A refrigerator, sink, dishwasher and stove are just some of the equipment that must be organized within your cabinet space. Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC will help guide you with what works best with the space you have for your new kitchen design.

#4. Knobs: Believe it or not, knobs stand out. There are endless options of size, style, color and placement for cabinet and drawer knobs. Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC's consultant, Amy, will work with you to assist in finding the style that works best with your individual taste.

Flooring: Even though it's below eye level, the flooring in a room will complete the look and contribute to the overall feel of your kitchen.

#1. Wood floors don't always have to be wood. There are many other materials, such as bamboo, that are still inexpensive but look and feel just as good. Wood floors are still a popular floor finish and come with a variety of sizes, colors and finishes. Many clients also choose an eco-friendly option such as Bamboo.

#2. Linoleum is a less costly option. It comes in all different styles and can be replaced if damaged. Vinyl floor options are also considered often. There are many to choose from. Sometimes the less expensive route is the way to go, but many vinyl options are high-end products which can mimic the look of tile. Vinyl floors tend to be a warmer floor, therefore, can also be a good choice on concrete slabs.

#3. Tile can come in ceramic, porcelain or stone. The options are endless and give you a more custom look.

Countertops: The most used item in the kitchen is often considered the focal point of the kitchen. The counters should be durable for everyday use as well as an enhancement to the kitchen. Over the years the options have become endless.

#1. Granite, Marble, Soapstone and Quartz are beautiful non-porous stone materials that are stain, heat, scratch and impact resistant. Today's stones require a lot less maintenance and come in a variety of beautiful looks and styles. Homeowners pay close attention to the layout of their countertop as it relates to the design aspect of their new kitchen; from tones to edges selected.

#2. Laminate is the most affordable option for countertops. There are still many options to choose from and there are patterns that closely resemble more costly materials. Although laminates are used less frequently, the manufacturers have done a good job in developing styles that can create a more high-end look without the cost. Laminate tops are great for mudrooms, laundry rooms and craft rooms.

#3. Wood isn't very common in highly used kitchens but does have a specific

style that might be the right fit for you. Butcher block tops are sometimes added to work areas in combination with other countertop materials.

#4. Stainless Steel has been growing in popularity because of it's ease with cleaning and the industrial appeal it gives.

#5. Glass works great when choosing the color and shape for your countertops. The possibilities are limitless for this modern style.

#6. Recycled materials, Concrete, Travertine and Tile are a few alternative looks that are great options for your new kitchen.

Accessories: These items are a great way to accent the room. You can mix and match to create dynamic and it allows you to continue creating your look over time.

#1. Stainless Steel is both modern and classy. It matches most other materials and can change the look of your kitchen drastically. Manufacturers have done a great job developing sinks, faucets and accessories that match the stainless steel appliance finishes for a consistent look throughout your new kitchen.

#2. Kitchen Islands are very versatile. They provide practical counter and cabinet space while adding another element to your overall look. An Island can be small and mobile with the use of wheels; or it can be a permanent part of the kitchen, providing additional seating.
When considering an island, you don't have to follow the traditional layout where major appliances, such as the sink, oven etc, are against the kitchen walls. Instead, try placing one, like your stove, in the island. This will enable you to cook and socialized at the same time. By utilizing the extra counter space that an island provides, you are inviting another dynamic to your cooking experience and opening up your kitchen to guests and gatherings in your home.

#3. A Bar can be built into a counter or wall, creating an upscale feel using entertainment features such as wine fridge and wine rack.

With all of the many options to enhance your kitchen, Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC will make your dream a reality. Call today to schedule your complimentary consultation to begin the process of designing and developing the kitchen of your dreams.

Indoor Remodeling in the Fall

The sun is shining, but it is cold outside. It is the perfect time to start thinking about in indoor remodel before the fall. When the holiday season arrives, it's nice to be able to host. Whether it's a luncheon, dinner party or just family get together, we all want to be proud of the house we're showing off. The kitchen and bathroom are the most commonly seen areas; they also make the biggest difference to your house guests when the atmosphere centers around food. Now is the time to get started on your kitchen or bathroom remodel.
A remodel is much more than putting in a window and replacing cabinets; there is a lot of time and effort in the beginning to ensure that you get exactly what you want. Planning involves several different factors. A time line is necessary so that you can set expectations that are realistic and clearly established for everyone. Communication is imperative when planning a remodel. We will come to an agreement first and continue to speak about the project as it progresses.

Another part of planning is choosing the materials to use for your remodel. Both the kitchen and the bathroom have many things in common, such as faucets, cabinets, shelves, flooring and other similar accessories. We will work with you on your budget to create the look you are going for while maintaining an affordable project.

Designing is the second (and to some the most exciting) step to a remodel. With a kitchen or a bath design, you have to decide what your ultimate goal is for the space provided. What are the things you don't like? What are the things that you would like to add or alter? Putting in a bay window, adding a bench, extending a wall or changing the layout of the entire room are all examples of design changes.

We will also go over this with you to help you come up with ideas and discuss what is possible in the already existing layout of your home. Here are a few kitchen and bath remodels we had the pleasure of accomplishing. The "Before and After" photos are a great way to get excited about your own project and to be able to see the potential behind the mess.

                                      Before

  After

Construction comes after the designing phase; this is when it's time to get to work. Once the days get shorter and the temperature starts to drop you lose valuable time to dedicate to a remodel. It's also less stressful when you don't have to worry about weather restrictions.

One of the biggest hindrances to an inside remodel is having to move around the mess. In the summer, there are many more options for spending your spare time. Without being confined to a heated house, or bundled up in your sun room, you can be comfortable while we work. A major benefits for parents of children and teenagers is being able send the kids outside to play.

As Fall comes around, holidays pass by so quickly. We all know the feeling of waking up and wondering where the last month has gone; and even the last year! Don't wait too long to put off a remodel; no one wants to order in a Thanksgiving dinner. At Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC we can get your kitchen and bath remodels done efficiently and timely so that you don't have to stress about getting it all finished.

Please give us a call to inquire about your next remodeling project. It's never too late to have your dream home. Remodeling is a great alternative to looking for another house; and by choosing Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC you can make that dream a reality.

Take your house to a new level, and really impress your house guests this holiday season. If looks aren't important to you, think about think about the practicality and convenience of your current kitchen and/or bathroom. We can help you with any size project, big, medium or small.

Now that spring has finally arrived, it's time to think about adding a porch onto the back of your house. There are so many benefits of a screened in porch and now is the perfect time to expand.
It is best to start with a renovation of the back of the house. You can give yourself more practical space to use on a daily basis while staying private. If you have a large back yard, or are not concerned with space, you can really create a nice second living area. By pushing the porch out farther you will have more walking space and room for furniture. If you like plants and decorations this will give you the room to have a look and feel without being cramped or stuffed. Having chairs and patio styled sofas is a common desire for the backyard porch, but if you are limited on space you may end having to choose between pieces of furniture; or having to switch things out depending on what you want to do.
In the summertime it is nice to be able to sit outside and eat without bugs flying and crawling all around you. With a decent sized porch you can have a dining area with a table and chairs. When you're hosting a large number of people this will allow everyone to enjoy each other's company outside in the beautiful weather. It is also nice to sit out and read or nap. Having a hammock or a bench swing in your porch is a much more soothing experience than being out in the woods.
A porch doesn't have to just be a square that juts out into the yard, either. That can create big corners on either side where the porch meets the side of the house. It can also be hard to match the new, updated style of the porch with the house behind it. To many, it is important to remain consistent and not look as though the addition was just put there. Instead imagine your porch covering the entire length of the house. With this option you can have two or even three separate rooms on your porch. If this seems too lengthy or you have windows you don't want covered, you can have your porch angle to the wall for a softer touch.
In the case that you don't want your porch directly in the middle of the house but off the one side, there are many things you can do with this style as well. You can screen-in part of the porch and leave the rest open, creating a progression in style and giving you more options. You can also have the steps from your porch adjacent to the house so as not protrude into your yard but to run smooth with the direction of the house. Many people think that because they have a set of steps or some concrete slabs already leading from the back door to their yard that it will be difficult to remodel. This is just a small bump in the road to an amazing look and a practical addition. It is normal to have existing features already on your house, this kind of renovation is not a problem to handle for remodeling professionals.
Whether you're remodeling an already existing porch or creating an entirely new one, having a screened in porch that best suits your style and needs is very important. The luxury of enjoying the outdoors with friends and family, or even some quiet time to yourself, without the drawbacks of nature is something many people dream of; and it is not an impossible scenario if you call Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC today to help create your ideal porch. We would love to sit down with you and go over all of your ideas. We have been working with clients for many years, and it is our mission to ensure you get exactly what you want in a timely, efficient and stress-free experience with the utmost quality in the business.
So this year, welcome spring! And welcome being able to sit outside to enjoy it!

As April's "showers" come to an end, it's time to be thinking about the sunny days ahead. The light is up until 9 pm and there's no longer that chilly breeze that sweeps by under a cloud or in the shade. This is the chef's time to shine!!

With all the back yard barbecues, neighborhood get togethers and kid's sleepovers it is imperative that you have a place for everyone to gather... and still be outside. The outdoor kitchen is still an up-and-coming style because some think of it as a luxury; and of course you can get as fancy as you want with the design and equipment. But it doesn't have to seem out of reach. It is a convenience and a necessary addition for many that can still be affordable.

At Rendon we pride ourselves on knowing what is best for our clients and making sure that you get what you want. There are so many styles and choices to make when designing an outdoor kitchen; and we will walk you through picking out every piece to this amazing puzzle.

Some outdoor kitchens are a long countertop surrounding a grill with cabinets, a smoker, a mini fridge and some other somewhat simple additions. These kinds of models can be put anywhere and made with wood, stone, bricks etc. They allow you to be open and still in the middle of the party while grilling and preparing. Adding an arbor above where you can hang things is also a very nice touch. There are so many great things you can do with this type of design!

Other outdoor kitchens are more involved and really make a space of their own. With a canopy roof over head and a counter that extends into an L shape (or farther if you prefer), this is an extravagant look with endless possibilities. You can use a larger grill and even more hot plates with the extra counter space. You can also put a bar on one side with some stools for your guests. With the ceiling and big support beams give it a gazebo type of look.

This outdoor kitchen more elaborate in it's placement and yet still modest with the furnishings.

This style is more of a literal kitchen that has been placed outdoors, providing even more than some indoor kitchens.

This design offers something in between and can always have adjustments to materials to cut costs.

No matter what look and feel you're going for, or what your budget is, Rendon Remodeling LLC can help you discover the potential for your backyard. Together we will create a summertime masterpiece that will liven up your grilling experience. This luxury is quite practical and will make all the difference in the way you live both with just the family and with large groups of people. So use this great idea to enhance your summer living today, call us for a consultation!

So this year, welcome spring! And welcome being able to sit outside to enjoy it!

Remodeling Trends for 2014

Is it Time for a Renovation?

Most homeowners have at one point either thought about or actually made some sort of improvements on their home. In 2013 there was an increase in home remodeling  and we believe the trend will continue in 2014, and into the future. There are many different types of remodels and some will improve your home value better than others. Some good home improvements include remodeling a bathroom,  or kitchen, adding an addition or bedroom, finishing a basement, adding a deck, and making a home environmentally sustainable.

Kitchen Improvements

It is common now for people to want a modern kitchen with upgraded cabinets, eat-in space, upgraded appliances, and even a larger area. It used to be popular to have kitchens with a more rustic feel with wood cabinetry and warm colors. Now homeowners are choosing sleeker designs, with high-end countertops, back-splashes, flooring, lighting, and cabinetry. The kitchen has always been a central part of the house, where family and friends congregate, and the kitchen improvements we have done recently really create a warm and inviting space.

Appliances used to be white, black, or stainless steel. Now there are many more choices that make the kitchen unique. For example, hidden appliances have become popular. This is where the appliances are designed with the same look as the cabinets, so they appear to blend in with everything around them. This gives the kitchen a smooth look with a great deal of synergy.

Bathroom Improvements

There are many different ways to update a bathroom. In 2014 we expect to see more walk-in showers, heated floors or towel racks, and more storage space. These designs will be replacing wainscoting and old-fashioned tubs. The same type of cabinetry and countertops that we see in remodeled kitchens can be used in bathrooms. Homeowners are choosing more neutral colors and sleek designs. Some colors that homeowners have been choosing are cool colors like light blue and off-white. Jetted bathtub, glass shower enclosure, and rain shower heads or multiple shower heads are also popular bathroom upgrades.

Making a Home Sustainable

People are going green more each year, but in 2014 it may get easier. Becoming eco-friendly is a good idea for every feature of a home, but it is something that is being incorporated into home changes says Craig Webb, editor-in-chief of Remodeling Magazine. Remodels will use more bamboo, energy efficient appliances and designs that incorporate the climate. Simple ways to make your home more sustainable are adding energy saving light bulbs, cutting down the use of utilities, and decreasing the amount of running water. Becoming eco-friendly is a good idea, and there are many ways to add that to your home upgrade.

All of these improvements help a home to continue experiencing increased value. Room additions, and kitchen or bathroom remodels tend to bring about the greatest return on your investment.  If you want to stay in your home but it is not completely meeting all of your needs, contact us for a consultation. Together we can come up with the perfect remodeling design to suit your wants and needs.

Qualifications Matter

Rendon Remodeling & Design Key Employees Earn a Prestigious Certification

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has a rigorous certification process that, once successfully completed, affords the qualified remodeler superior credentials. The certification goes far beyond the technical aspects of the trade and incorporates key elements such as ethics, business skills, and legal matters associated with the industry. A NARI Certified Remodeler has been blessed as a highly qualified professional by a well-regarded industry leader.

According to the association - “NARI’s CR program measures skill and expertise valued not only by other professional remodelers, but by consumers as well. Highly respected by those who have achieved the designation, the CR program identifies professional remodelers who have undergone comprehensive review and testing in areas of business management, ethical conduct, and technical skills.  In addition, they must also adhere to NARI’s strict Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. The NARI certification program assess the knowledge and skills of the remodeler in over 20 remodeling task areas including business methods and practices, building codes and construction law, planning and building site layout, and all trades skills required in remodeling your home.  Attaining this certification requires the candidate to have been working full time in the remodeling field for at least 5 years and passing a comprehensive assessment exam.  Preparation for this exam takes up to 16 weeks of intensive study and self-examination.  In addition Certified Remodelers are bound to abide by the NARI Code of Ethics and the NARI Standards of Practice.”

Why is hiring a qualified remodeler so important? Most states, including Virginia, require remodeling contractors to be licensed.  Proper insurances are also critical to the qualifications of a contractor, but not all contractors have gone the extra mile to acquire a special certification. If you are looking for a contractor, you will most likely be able to see the work previously performed by asking for examples and before/after photos. This will give you a good idea of the quality of their work and the outcome once the project was completed. This, however, will not give you insight into how it was to do business with this contractor. In an field with a history of ethics and professionalism complaints, it is extremely important for homeowners to have confidence in the company they have chosen to work on their most precious physical asset - their house.

Having a certification from the only independent association dedicated exclusively to the remodeling industry, puts any remodeler in a position that automatically engenders confidence from the homeowner. NARI is a not-for-profit trade association with more than 50 years of industry experience. When this organization certifies a remodeler through their challenging process, consumers can be sure they are selecting not just the most knowledgeable contractor in their area, but also one who respects ethical codes of conduct, demonstrates excellent business process, and an understanding of professionalism not seen in the general field. When it comes to people’s homes, knowing that the remodeling contractor chosen to work on it possesses these credentials is a huge benefit.

Proudly we announce that both Michael and Joseph Rendon ( two of Rendon Remodeling & Design employees) were recently awarded the acclaimed NARI certification.  An honor the owner, Fred Rendon, has also held for many years. After considerable effort, we now possess the additional qualifications that take our already stellar reputation in the industry to the next level.

Contact us for an initial consultation, and let’s see what we can create together.
